Chlorophyll Water® – A Dietitian’s Review

Disclaimer: I had the opportunity to review Chlorophyll Water®. While I wasn’t monetarily compensated for this post, I did receive a case of product. Opinions are all my own. (#ad)

Chlorophyll Water® ‘s translucent emerald hue is one of the prettiest shades I’ve seen. Unlike some other enhanced waters, there is no food coloring to make it visually appealing. Nor is there any added sugars, artificial sweeteners, or sugar alcohols. This “naturally flavored” (subtly sweet) water uses Copper Chlorophyllin (Chlorophyll) which is largely responsible for the color and hue.

I took my first sip and it was actually quite refreshing. It’s mildly flavored with organic lemon juice and Spearmint. And the delicate blend of ingredients goes down smooth and residue free. There isn’t even a hint of the earthy, pungent aftertaste one experiences after downing a shot of grass juice, of which contains – you’ve guessed it!! – chlorophyll.

What I wasn’t expecting, has nothing to do with the taste or color. (I have to admit, before actually reading the the label, I immediately reached for a bottle from the case I’d just received and downed half of it in seconds.) This chlorophyll water is fortified with Vitamin A, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C and Vitamin D. There aren’t a lot of natural whole foods that contain the essential Vitamin D, so I welcome fortification, especially in a product that isn’t loaded with added sugars and fillers!

So here I can hydrate and suck in some essential vitamins. Just maybe, I can reap the benefits of a pigment that enables plants to thrive. And believe me, during or after a workout, I can finish an  entire 20 oz bottle in no time at all. And hydrating upon waking tops my list of Great Ways to Start Your Day!

So just how might I benefit from a Chlorophyll enhanced water?

Well if you’ll note the fact that chlorophyll is key to plant growth and survival, it would seem likely that a person could benefit as well. As a vital pigment, chlorophyll may help promote healthy alkaline PH levels, boost energy levels, detoxify and strengthen the immune system. If it could do this, how about it’s affect on the skin?

  • Anti-aging properties?
  • Shrinking the visibility of skin pores?
  • Improving acne-prone skin?

As an acne-prone individual nearing the end of my 40’s – this doesn’t sound too bad. But could this really be the case. I had to investigate.

A few small studies involving topical usage chlorophyll showed significant benefit in reduction of pore size and improved skin, particularly in Asian women. Other studies have reported wound healing as well as body odor reduction. And there are also claims that chlorophyll may have an effect hormonal balance, arthritis relief and weight loss. Potential yes, but overwhelming evidence, not yet!

So while there’s still plenty of room for more research on the subject, it doesn’t hurt that this chlorophyll infused vitamin water is quite hydrating, refreshing and pleasant to drink. So after my next outdoor yoga workout, you might see an emerald glow as I tilt my head back to drink this Nature Enhanced Vitamin Water.
